Making Hanukkah Word Searches
Many people start their word search with a list of words in mind. Consider what words are most relevant to the holiday. Whether you’re making a Hanukkah word search, a Chanuka word search, a Chanukkah word search, or any variation thereupon, you can include all of the spellings of the holiday in your word search, along with other Hebrew words. If your kids are in Hebrew school, test their knowledge by listing Hebrew words in the word list, then adding the translation into the word search, or vice versa. This word list features only Hebrew words for Hanukkah.
Hanukkah is a family holiday, so you can also make Hanukkah word searches that include the names of your family members.
Do you have any favorite foods, games, or gifts that you associate with Hanukkah? Add it to the word search! Latkes and other foods cooked in oil will whet your appetite while solving, and don’t forget gelt! You might include other Jewish favorites like matzo ball soup, too.
If you’re playing the dreidel game, add the meaning of each side of the dreidel. Then add some favorite Hanukkah songs to the list like the Dreidel song or the traditional Ma’Oz Tzur. Your word list might also feature historical words about the holiday to help kids understand the meaning and importance of the celebration.
Once you’re ready to design your puzzle, think about your word search’s meaning. Use the home to signify where you light the candles and celebrate. Or, if you’d like something a little more simple yet creative, consider this round “Hanukkah Latke” word search.
Finally, think about the size of your Hanukkah word searches. If you are making word searches for eight days, make them smaller for pacing purposes. Or, if you have special words for each day, size it according to the needs of your list.
